Fans of The Last Child by John Hart and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini take notice. The Secret Tree by Patrick Bousum and Jeff Bennington is a historical, coming of age thriller that’s making a splash with readers. If you enjoy escaping to another time and place, The Secret Tree has what you’re looking for–taking readers back to 1959 in rural Indiana. If you want suspense, The Secret Tree has that, too. If you want characters that pop off the page, The Secret Tree will not disappoint. Andy Harper, Addie Beasley and Russell Veederman will become your good friends. You’ll cheer for Andy, cry for thick skinned Addie, and warn Russell to “Watch out!”
The main protagonist, Andy Harper, is 13-years old, but this read is far from a children’s book. This is adult fiction that will draw you in, bring back memories from your childhood, and keep you on the edge of your seat, chewing your fingernails off–it’s that suspenseful! The characters are that great! The story line is that incredible!
I have read Mr. Bennington’s other books, including Reunion, which I loved, but The Secret Tree is by far Jeff’s best work along with Mr. Bousum, who wrote the original novella that the twosome made into a full-length novel. This book currently has 23 reviews with a 4.9/5.0-star rating and rightly so.
Not only is Jeff Bennington a bestselling author, he is the founder of The Kindle Book Review, and helper to indie authors. Over two years ago he began promoting unknown authors who were getting rave reviews, but hadn’t been noticed yet; authors like Robert Bidinotto, and Hugh Howey.
ABOUT THE SECRET TREE:
When 13-year old Andy Harper inherits a secret from his dying neighbor, Mr. Beasley, he discovers how sinister the world can be, what true friendship means, and that being a hero in 1959 may cost him his life.
Grieving from his father’s disappearance and his grandfather’s untimely death, Andy is nearly hopeless. The intrigue of the secret, and his friendship with Mr. Beasley, give him a renewed sense of purpose. But when the men who used to run with the local mob discover that Andy knows about the “secret”, they come out of the shadows and a hunt for the evil truth begins.
Andy finds himself fighting for his life with his friends, committed to his promise, and searching for answers in a house haunted by a one-handed witch.
